This is a replacment for one I bought my husband last Christmas. He foregot to remove thermometer from meat before replacing lid on smoker.
He was sick...he loved his Taylor Instant Read Digital Thermometer. I don't think I have to worry about replacing this one anytime soon!

This item doesn't work. I called & the representative said that the battery might be dead. It is very hard to take apart to find the battery & I feel that it should have been functional upon delivery. Now I have to dig out the receipt, find a box & mail it back for an exchange, which at this time of the year is a monumental task, considering this is a $20 item. I am very dissatisfied!

I love the design of this thermometer it is easy to read and turns off if I forget to turn it off. Great feature. The cover for the probe portion is a great idea I was always disliked leaving the probe exposed to the germs in the air when not in use.

This instant read thermometer does exactly what is advertised. It is a great value for the cost. I would recommend it to anyone who needs an instant reading thermometer. I have used it mainly for baking bread and it has not failed me.

The thermometer worked both times I used it in the last six months, then I tried to use it this week 04/03/11 and it appears the battery is dead. A few unintelligible characters scrolled across the screen before it went completely blank. I tried to find the battery, but destroyed the device by the time I found out how to open the case. Forget the digital, get an analog thermometer.

I am very happy with my thermometer. I never had a digital one before. Since I don't leave it in the meat while cooking it is so easy to clean! It also has a cover to protect it and me from poking something in the drawer.

The unit arrived with a dead battery - and it wasn't worth the hassle of shipping it back for the cost of a battery. This should have been checked before it was shipped.

The first time I used it was this Thanksgiving for my turkey. It
read the temp. perfectly which resulted in a perfect tasting turkey! My guests were happy too.

I've only used it once, but I think it registers a little high. I tested a small pork roast, and it showed 164+ degrees, but the juices still ran dark pink. I thought 160 was well done. Love the way it works, so I will recalculate and work with it.
Pros: Easy to Clean/Wash, easy to use, size, Appearance/ Design /Style, capacity
Cons: seems to read temperature too high

insta-read digital thermometer by Taylor

The instructions are VERY short and non-descript. After a few minutes of playing with it, I discovered how to turn it on, as it's on a delay I guess. (at first,I thought the battery was dead).
I do like the range scale, as I make cheese which needs to be 98 deg. and salt rising bread, at which the starter needs to be between 90 and 100 deg. Most thermometers won't go that low.
Overall, I do like this product for many things, but it can not be left in a roast in the oven, so a more traditional meat thermometer is useful if you don't want to keep taking your roast in and out to check the temp.
Pros: Easy to Clean/Wash, Appearance/ Design /Style, easy to store, Functional/Useful
Cons: Support/instructions, Difficult to use, inadequate instructions

Caution

I had read a recent previous review of this Taylor thermometer and the reviewer noted that her thermometer did not work when she received it.
I had exactly the same experience. I called CHEF and the representative offered to send me another one. Hopefully this one works. I had a Taylor Instant Read purchased 10 years ago, which was great. However, the battery died. I don't know who is making these same thermometers today, but I can speculate.

I hate the packaging

It is hard for me to judge the actual product. This is my first thermometer of this type and I did not know the probe was hollow and "bent" easily. While trying to remove it from the hard plastic wrapper, I bent it without intent or using much muscle. At this point I am still testing it when I can against others to see how accurate it is after I bent it. There should be a warning on the wrapper or they should use a differnet type of wrapper. I can't believe I am the only person who has, or will, have this experience.

My wife passed away recently and I have to cook for myself and am not much of a cook. We had another brand of thermometer but I found it awkward to use as it was shaped like a golf club. The Taylor is better designed and easier to insert and get a reading and also easier to turn on and off. I am very satisfied with this purchase.
