Professional grade machine sized for the home
October 25, 2007 jyakefrom Alexandria, VA
"I am an admitted (and unrepentant) coffee nut, and have a variety of automatic drip, urn, travel and stovetop coffee makers of various types. For years my espresso-type endeavors were limited to a series of Krups steam-driven machines or stovetop Mokas, but after my most recent steam-driven machine gave out in 2005, I finally resolved to try a pump-driven model.
After test-driving various models owned by friends, I determined several must-have requirements, as well as a small list of desirable features--the Breville 800ESXL has all of them:
Must haves: - adjustable frothing handle - sufficient pressure to extract strong, aromatic coffee with a robust crema (15 bars, in this case) - a removable, large water reservoir: no waiting for the machine to cool before refilling it for the next drink round - single and double-shot filter inserts - easy-to-clean and easy-to-remove drip tray with reservoir - self-purging pump at end of pressure cycle: no brackish water in the pipes when next you use it - fully manual operation: pull short or long espressos based on the drinker's preferences--not a preset value.
Extra features: - pod filter insert, allowing you to use pre-made espresso pods - hot water dispenser: for americanos, teas and instant beverage mixes - large cup-warming tray on machine's top: keep a set of 6 demitasse cups ready for anytime use - illuminated water reservoir level indicator - additional access to reservoir from back: add water on-the-fly, without interrupting the cycle
Additionally, the 800ESXL has an exceptionally attractive exterior, in my opinion--it's gleaming, brushed stainless steel finish, strong, spare design and impressive heft coordinate nicely with modern professional kitchen appliances. There is a storage tray beneath the water reservoir to hold filter inserts and a cleaning brush out of sight, and the drip tray itself slides out for easy rinsing in the sink.
The greater-than-average height between the portafilter and drip tray is both a blessing and a curse: it allows for larger cups--great for large latte mugs or bowls, but increases the likelihood of splatter when pulling espresso into demitasse-size cups. Fortunately, this is easily accommodated: I keep a up-ended ramekin next to the machine for use as a mini-platform, and place demitasses on it when pulling smaller drinks.
Of the models I've tried, this one is by far the most bang for the buck. Enthusiastically recommended."

Esquire of Espresso

"Happily, I bought this machine on the recommendation of a friend. Having worked with commercial machines, I find the solid construction of this machine to be superb! The porta-filter is NOT plastic, like many in it's price category. Which gives you confidence in heavy use. The crema that comes from a proper grind from this machine, can and does rival any home machine on the market-in fact it surpasses my last model and brand. A good buy for the home afficianado."

I love my Breville!
May 10, 2008 CoffeeNutfrom Casper, WY
"I've had this machine for two and a half years now and have used it 1-2 times a day the whole time. I had two different machines prior to owning this one and I'll never go back to another brand (even the more expensive automatic ones). This machine makes the perfect cup of espresso and to-die-for lates. It's easy to use, easy to clean, yields reliably great results and makes a perfect crema. It also looks good on my counter. Guests in my house ask me about it all the time. It's my opinion that this is one of the best machines on the market at any price. Here are my hints for the new owner: -Every month or so run a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and distilled water through the machine with the empty filter you use most often in place. Also run it through the frothing wand. Follow with distilled water alone. This helps prevent buildup of minerals. -Wash the water reservoir with warm soapy water at least once a week. -Empty and wash the area under the grates regularly. I've been doing this as long as I've had the machine and it still works and looks like it's new."

matched the coffee shop iced latte...
April 2, 2008 love2eatfrom boston, ma
"...and that's good enough for me. I don't claim to be a coffee expert but I've been needing a little caffeine in the afternoon and I wanted to treat myself. This machine does the job, brewing what seems like good espresso and handily frothing milk. I'm still sorting out the art and science behind espresso making, but have yet to get the "golden rule" of 1 oz of espresso in 20 seconds or so with this machine. I've gone as far as bringing down the bathroom scale to measure my tamping pressure and buying a new, better coffee grinder. I've also noticed that the water temp never goes above 160 or so - even Breville's site says it brews at 158 - 187 - everything I read says we're looking for 190-195. Problem? not for my palate, the coffee seems fine.
Bottom line - seems like the price/value ratio is right for this product. I definitely feel like I'm getting my money's worth and then some. And I'm saving $4 on those iced latte's from you know where.
I wanted to feel rewarded every afternoon and I do - with a wonderful latte or cappacino I made myself."

Great Latte's
March 20, 2008 elacfrom South Hadley, MA.
"I have enjoyed this product tremendously. No more do I stop at all those expensive coffee shops for my coffee drinks, because it is so much better at home. The product is easy to use with professional results. It steams the milk perfectly and the expresso is always done right, without burning the coffee. This was an invest well worth making. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good coffee drink one step above the usual."

WOW! Great Purchase!
November 9, 2007 mruffanerfrom Albuquerque, NM
"I received this espresso machine as a birthday present from my husband and was reluctant to use it. I was a regular Starbucks customer, sometimes twice a day. This machine makes espresso superior to Starbucks with little effort. The quality of the espresso is evident by the large amount of crema produced with each cup of espresso made. I no longer make a daily Starbucks stop and the machine paid for itself within a couple of months. The maintenance is easy and making an espresso is effortless. After doing research on some high end espresso makers, I had my reservations about this machine, but it has proved me wrong! I do recommend keeping your coffee beans in an air tight container and using a quality burr grinder for the best results. If you want a simple espresso machine that produces the perfect cup of espresso then this is the machine for you....and what a bargain!! I am excited about recommending this machine to any coffee/espresso enthusiast out there!! You will not be dissapointed!!"

The Next Best Thing to coffee in Paris
October 25, 2007 Denisefrom San Francisco
"We love drinking coffee in the Paris, not only the romance of it but also because it is so darn Great! We came home last fall only to miss our morning, afternoon and evening coffee rituals in between the wine ones. We had yet to find the perfect cup in SFO; that is until we purchased this espresso maker! It is the absolute best out there! We did months of research and ended up going with the Breville. Not only is the maker fantastic but their customer service is outstanding. We had a little rubber component break, which really was not a big deal; but, when I called to see about getting a new rubber piece, they just gave us a new espresso maker and had us send the other back -all prepaid! Can not beat that for customer service. You will be very happy with this project and the quality of coffee it produces!"

Great Buy for the Money
October 15, 2007 BaristerWannabefrom Galveston, TX
"I have been through a Krups steam, Krups pump, Breville Cafe Roma over the past number of decades. This machine is by far the best machine for the money. The quality of expresso and lattes is excellent. Many, many improved features have been added. My coffee snob friends think you have to spend your IRA retirement to get a good machine but not so with the Breville 800ESXL. I love the height between the portafilter and stainless steel platform to allow a larger cup. The swivel frother is very thoughtful. To make an Americano, you just switch to "hot water" and you've got everything you need. This is a real investment so use the money you have saved by not having to buy the lattes at the chain of "S" coffee shops and buy a really good burr grinder. I plan on using this until it dies, hopefully not in the near future."
