"I use this nearly every day on all sizes of onions. My son likes chopped onions on just about everything so I can chop one up, put it in a container and he can help himself. A lot less mess to clean up than when he was chopping his own onions. Mine doesn't have the plastic cover. However, I find that if you press the top down slightly (just enough to break the top of the onion), you can place one hand over the onion while slamming the top down with the other. This way, onion pieces are not flying all over the kitchen. You could also place a towel over it."

"I have not had good success at using this gadget. Usually, I find that the onion gets stuck in the grate partially chopped and leaving me with a big mess to clean up. I have not been able to get the cutting grate through the onion - only partially.
Reading the other reviews, perhaps using very small onions and aggessively slamming the top down might produce better results. But I have really not been pleased with this device with my previous attempts using it. The idea of it though is nice if it worked."

One of my favorite tools

"I bought this about 6 months ago, and I love it. I use it to make my salsa. It makes cutting onions a lot easier. I just put sliced onions in it, push the cutter down, and get a knife and push the onions into my bowl. I also use this to chop water chestnuts that I put into my spinach dip, and again it makes the job a lot faster. I am so glad I bought this."

Useful Tool for Strong Person

"I purchased this chopper a year or so ago. Mine didn't come with the plastic cover. But otherwise is the same Aligator Chopper. The first time I used it I was discouraged. I merely crushed the onion and got pieces of onion stuck in the grate. What a mess. After several attempts, and reading the directions I might add, I used a smaller onion, and slammed the cutter portion down as hard as I could in a swift movement. Chopped the onion perfectly, though I had onion pieces flying everywhere. You can't just press down on the cutting handle. You have to slam it down on the onion. Otherwise, you end up with the mess I had in the beginning. If you're strong enough, this can be a useful tool. Honestly, I find myself using a knife to quickly chop an onion with less mess. But if I were to make a huge bowl of salsa I'd probably use the chopper."
