I had a Kitchen Aid before it was the "in" thing, as a wedding gift 25 years ago, and just this year needed to replace it,. I know they sold the Kitchen Aid name to a new company, and was a little leary if the quality would be as commendable. When I started looking at stand mixers there were very few competitors with the Kitchen Aid, but this model caught my attention. It is fabulous. Love the ease of use, and the fold option and timer are a great asset. I have only had it about a month, but have really enjoyed it, and anticipate lots of use over the course of the next 20-25 years.
Pros: quality, Low noise, construction, Appearance/ Design /Style, Performs Well, Number of speeds, Long-lasting

Review 4 for Cuisinart 5.5-Quart Stand Mixer SM-55
I wanted to replace my 25+ year-old KitchenAid mixer. There was nothing wrong with it, but I had remodeled my kitchen and the color of the old mixer didn't match any of the new appliances. I fully intended to purchase another KitchenAid until I received the issue of Cook's Magazine that included reviews of stand mixers. After considering the magazine's recommendation and doing some additional research, I purchased the 5.5 Quart Cuisinart. I've owned a variety of other Cuisinart products, so figured I couldn't go too wrong! I really enjoy this mixer! I cook/bake a variety of things and from breads to cookies, cakes and fudge, to mashed potatoes and whipped cream, I have had great results. The timer is particularly handy when I'm multi-tasking (holidays!) in the kitchen or if a less experienced cook is doing the work. When I purchased the mixer, I received a coupon for the blender attachment. I rarely use a blender except for frozen margaritas, but it does a great job on them, crushing the ice with no apparent strain on the motor. The "fold" setting is also very handy for those delicate items. I'm not thrilled with the splash guard - I think putting it on and taking it off is awkward - and when it's on, scraping the sides of the bowl is nearly impossible. However, with that said, the mixer is sturdy and unless planned obsolescence is part of Cuisinart's marketing strategy, my mixer will probably be around longer than I!

Review 5 for Cuisinart 5.5-Quart Stand Mixer SM-55
I recently received the Cuisinart Stand Mixer SM-55 for my 35th wedding anniversary. This is the dream stand mixer, in my opinion. I'm a Baby Boomer and I have a lot of trouble with arthritis that has weakened my hands and wrists. I can't stir up heavy batters or bread doughs by hand like I used to. I know my husband missed those home-made baked goods he enjoyed for so many years. My old stand mixer just didn't have enough power to do the sort of tasks I required help with, so I've been shopping for a long time for THE BEST mixer to replace it. I've never liked the KitchenAid mixers. This Cuisinart mixer is it! It mixes up a double batch of bread dough smoothly and quickly. I get perfect results every time. I never thought I'd use the automatic timer built into the mixer, but this is a great feature. You set it and walk away while the mixer purrs away and then shuts off automatically when the job is done. The parts are easy to get on and off (a must for me!). The mixer attachments are coated with a non-stick coating to make them easier to clean (they can even go into the dishwasher). The bowl has 2 handles to make it easy to manipulate. The exterior of the stainless steel bowl is mirror bright and smooth. The interior has a rougher, brushed surface to help it "grip" the heavy batters while the dough hook or paddle are rotating. The motor has 800 watts of quite, dependable power. It has never once heated up during a long work session. It also has a slow start feature that automatically starts the beater moving at the slowest speed, then it speeds up to whatever setting you have chosen so you don't have flour or other ingredients flying all over the counter. This mixer is sturdy, built to last and rock stable. It never wobbles or moves around the counter when heavy dough is being beaten. The cookbook and DVD that come with the mixer are a nice plus, but I did find some errors in the bread recipes where they call for only one packet of yeast for two loaves of bread. It takes two packs for two loaves to get a proper rise out of the bread dough. Other than that, there is not a single thing I could complain about with this mixer. Even my arthritic hands can manage to get the splash guard on and off easily enough. The 5-1/2 quart model is just the right size for my husband and myself. It's not so huge that I can't lift or move it and it doesn't take up too much space on my counter. It handles any task that I ask of it from bread doughs, cakes, cookie batters, custard pies, even making meatloaf! Treat yourself to this great product.

I received the stand mixer I ordered in a timely manner and it was packaged very well. I have made several batches of cookies and some bread so far and it has worked flawlessly. I also bought the meat grinding attachment and made some deer sausage. The mixer had plenty of power for the task. It didn't take long to process 20 lbs of meat. It's easy to clean and seems to be very well made. I am very pleased so far. I debated between a kitchenaid and the cuisinart and I think I got way more for my money on this mixer. I guess time will tell if it is a quality machine.

I have used a Kitchenaid stand mixer for years, however the condo I purchased kitchen cabinets are too low for my stand mixer to sit on the counter, so I started thinking about getting another one that would fit...well this baby is low and sleek and fits perfectly!!! Add to that the timer and fold buttons ---this is a design made in cooking heaven!! I started using it the day it arrived and have not stopped......... I love it!!!

After looking at America's Test Kitchen's rating and customer reviews, I am glad I purchased the 5.5 qt instead of the 7 qt. The smaller machine takes up less counter space and does the job I want. I wanted the mixer right away and was very pleased that the next day shipping charge was so much lower than a different website (even though I had a gift card to that one) and it arrived next day like promised and I saved 80%. I made a double loaf recipe of raisin bread at once with no problems. I made several recipes in the included recipe book and dvd and then some others. Everything worked well and I like the timer... I have an old Kitcheaid mixer and was wondering about the noise but the Cuisnart is the quieter machine.

1st Time Mixer

I researched multiple mixers for approximately two weeks. I knew my mixer had to have a large motor because I wanted to use it to make homemade candy as I had burned up two hand-held mixers previously during past Christmases. I also knew it would help me make home-made bread, fudge, and frosting better and faster. After my research, this Cuisinart MIXER won by leaps and bounds--it offered 200 more watts and a five year motor warrenty at the same price of its competition even in stainless steel which is usualy priced slightly higher. I have used it once now, and love it--It is VERY powerful yet simple. The only thing I do not like about it is that the bowl does not rotate, so I have to frequently stop the mixer to push ingredients off the bowl sides. OVERALL, I REALLY LOVE IT--I beleive it will do its job for a very long time!
Pros: Appearance/ Design /Style, Battery Life, capacity, Cord length, durability, Easy to change/Empty filter, Easy to Clean/Wash, easy to store, easy to use, Easy to view/Read, Fast/ Speed, Functional/Useful, Long-lasting, Low noise, multi-purpose, Number of speeds, Performs Well, quality, size, True to Color, Value for Money, Warranty, Weight, mutiple attachments

New Heriloom Mixer!

So my great grandmother, grandmother and mother all had the same AMAZING oster mixer-it had every attachment and worked perfectly. One of the most important featuries was the super wide bowl-you could actually add ingredients while it mixed! I inherited my great grandmother's 8 years ago, and when the motor gave out on my mom's (after 25 years of double batch service) my grandmother passed hers down to my mom. My grandmother bought a KA artisan-and HATES it. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible to add ingredients while mixing and dough hook is barely capable. And on top of that the gears keep stripping. Then mine died-but since I was getting married soon I decided to wait to buy a new one. In the meantime grandma's died too (those motors lasted almost 30years); but it was around x-mas so mom HAD to get a new one. She ended up with a sunbeam (oster doesn't make mixers any more) and killed it in 2 years, but since she didn't want to buy one like the KA grandmother has, and the Pro series looked better but SO expensive she thought she'd just tough it out with another of the same model-it's now about to die (you can tell by the ozone smell when it gets hot). So now we come to the Cuisinart! After much research I settled on this one. Since I currently have a tiny kitchen I bought the smaller model-but wow-so much power. I can make triple batches of dough and not bat an eye. It is kind of noisy-but not any louder than the old oster. It is super heavy duty, but nice looking enough that even if I had the cabinet space to put it away I don't think I would. This isn't the mixer for the casual cook-if you bake twice a year don't waste your money. But if you routinely make triple or quadruple batches of sugar cookie dough this it IT! I also have the processor attachment-and I gave my cuisinart 12 cup to my mom it works so well!

I bake quite a bit of bread, I have a bread machine, but I enjoy my Cuisinart to mix my doughs, it has much more power to mix than any other brand, and the timer is perfect. I have been making the Artisan breads, and to use my Cuisinart Mixer is of great use, it never powers down, I have used it to make things other than bread, and everytime I use it and if I don't feel like kneading the dough, it will do it for me without a hitch, I enjoy my cuisinart.
Pros: i only have good things to say about it

This great mixer is my prized possession on my kitchen counter. I have mastered home made bread using this baby. All winter long the smell of fresh baked bread from the oven keeps the house toasty and appetites hearty. This is THE mixer for serious cooks. Timer, strong motor, everything I expected from a top notch brand like Cuisinart. I would recommend this machine to all my friends.
Pros: the best mixer i've used

Worth Waiting For

I have wanted a stand mixer for many years. I finally decided to buy one and went to look at the KitchenAids, ready to take the plunge. I was very disappointed, even at a great sale price. The finish of the product was just not all I expected after thinking about buying one someday for such a long time. They seemed clunky just getting the bowl on and off the stand, on several different sizes of mixers. I went home without a mixer. Within a week I saw a full page magazine ad for the new Cuisinart mixer. We are happy with other Cuisinart products - a food processor, cookware. I seached where to find the Cuisinart and couldn't believe the difference in the quality of the finish when I found it. I bought the 5.5 qt. Cuisinart stand mixer since this is my first stand mixer. It is so easy to use - incredibly smooth operation, shifts effortlessly between speeds. The timer is a great feature and I was surprised I had not seen one on a KitchenAid since they were supposed to be the best for so many years. Now I cannot imagine buying a stand mixer without one. I was not sure how easy the bowl would be to clean with the openings for the lock mechanism on the bottom but it is no problem at all. I just put it in a tub of hot, soapy water and it cleans up easily. I used it for Christmas baking; cookies are the biggest baking effort I do every year. I bake between 1,500 and 2,000 cookies, many kinds, and give them as gifts. I had the Cuisinart stand mixer in time to use it for the Christmas 2007 "baking season" and what a difference it made. It handled all those batches of cookie dough in a snap! And as I mentioned, it was a cinch to clean the bowl between different types of cookies. I've also used my stand mixer to make the best mashed potatoes I have ever made, to stir up a quiche and other egg dishes and pasta fillings, and to make meatloaf and meatballs. I am looking forward to trying it for many other kinds of recipes. My only disappointment (and this is a small one, one that I hope will be temporary) is Cuisinart has not yet published a cookbook with recipes specifically geared to their stand mixers. There are recipes in the instruction book, but I would love a book with many more recipes. What better way to encourage use of the product? I bought two cookbooks written for the KitchenAid stand mixer and have not noticed any problems due to differences in the mixers, however I am still keeping my eyes open for a Cuisinart stand mixer cookbook. The lack of an additional cookbook may be because the Cuisinart stand mixers are a relatively new product. Would I buy again? Yes! Do I recommend this to others? Yes, to anyone in the market for a stand mixer, even first time users. I had misgivings about taking up space on the kitchen counter to leave a stand mixer out all the time, but the Cuisinart is actually attractive to leave out. And with a stand mixer, you do need to leave it out so it is ready to go any time. I notice it when passing through the kitchen and it makes me think of what else I can make with it, what recipe to try next. I'm actually having more fun cooking and baking now that we have such a great stand mixer. Thank you Cuisinart!

Sorry this product wasn't around 30 years ago

I love to bake and bought this product to replace an old electric mixer. I chose Cuisinart because being a senior citizen my wrists are getting weaker and the two handles on the bowl are wonderful vs. the pitcher-style handle of the competition. The shape of the bowl fits perfectly on my hip when pouring out batters. The timer is excellent for senior moments when I walk away with the mixer running, the fold feature is great, and the ease of use and cleaning up is fantastic. I found when whipping potatoes I must first use the paddle then the whipping beater to avoid lumps. The hook and beaters are easy to change and clean. The only negative I have is the plastic splash guard. The product is super heavy duty, but the plastic splash guard is rather flimsy, difficult to get attached and unattached, and I do expect it to crack eventually. It is easy to use, the DVD not only shows you how to use the product, but actually demonstrates the recipes in the recipe book which is included. I highly recommend this product for young and old. Thinking back over all the baking I have done in my lifetime, I am sorry Cuisinart was not around 30 years ago.

Review 15 for Cuisinart 5.5-Quart Stand Mixer SM-55
I tested this unit with everything from egg whites to a double batch of bread dough. It creams butter beautifully, whips whites in no time flat and can handle the stiffest cookie or bread dough with ease. I kneaded a double batch of challah for 15 minutes and there were no signs of labor or overheating. The only problem I had was with a whole grain bread that wanted to crawl up and over the top of the dough hook. This problem was rectified by using the 7 quart model. It has a longer dough hook which the dough didn't climb. The unit showed no signs of walking across the counter when kneading heavy bread dough. The unit also has a 15 minute timer which is terrific if you need to walk away from the job. It also has a fold feature which is a couple of turns of the paddle at the slowest speed. The unit has 3 hubs for accessories. The lid is removable and the unit is very easy to clean. The bowl is heavy and must be tucked under an arm in order to scrape out the contents. The addition of a vertical third handle would solve this problem. My conclusion is that if you are a serious bread bakeror mix large quantities of anything, I would pick the 7 quart unit, otherwise the 5 quart model is plenty big enough for the average cook.
