Microplaner only
October 11, 2008 creativemediumfrom Colorado Springs
"A word to potential buyers of this product. While the plastic sheath is wonderful for your knuckles, the grater has several disabilities. 1. the fine grater is too fine. 2. the item is too bulky. 3. it is strictly a microplaner. Don't think you'll be grating regular cheese with this item. I ended up storing it on a hook on my pot rack. This would be a better product if the "fine" side was a regular cheese grater instead."

Not worth the money/ too bulky

"I love most of Microplane's products; so I was surprised I disliked this one as much as I did. I went so far as to donate it to a shelter to get it out of my kitchen. It is difficult to clean, doesn't work well on soft cheeses and for me it was not worth the money. It does grate parmasan cheese well on the fine side, but so do the original microplane graters; at a fraction of the price! I'd stick with those. I'd rather grate cheddar cheese or mozzerela with my Cuisanart than this grater."

High quality grater!

"This is definitely created for grating alone, it is not a multi purpose grating / slicing tool like most box graters. It is a specialty item, and it does what is was designed for beautifully. The fine grating side reduces hard cheeses to a near powder like consistency that is perfect for sauces, and works well for hard spices as well. The larger side produces perfectly even shreds. One issue: I think the plastic flap - like slider should have been designed differently.. perhaps more of a box shape than just a flip up would to hold a little more, and be more of a stable surface. It is sometimes difficult to get things to stay in the little flap, and pieces get stuck. But because of it's great overall performance, I am willing to overlook it."

Better than Average

"I like the more uniform sheds produced by the sharper square design. Watch your knuckles though, this thing comes with a slider attachment for a reason! Unfortunately it's the slider is best used for cheese and small things and isn't as useful on big or long skinny items. Grooves for slider can allow small bits to get caught near the top handle but it's usually not a problem. I would have preferred a coarse instead of fine side, but that's a personal preference. Overall I'd still chose it as my main shredder."
