I received this mortar and pestle as a gift and it was heavier and bigger than i expected. this is a plus though as it helps with stability while using it. It is solidly built and doesn't seem like it would crack or break even with heavy long-term use. the only negative aspect of it (which may only be because i'm a perfectionist) is that the mortar is slightly lop-sided on the outside. the center is great and it works wonderfully though. great gift for a food enthusiast.

This is the first mortar and pestle I have owned and I love it. It is larger than I expected, but all the better for grinding without spilling over. And in solid granite it is strong and sturdy and stays put as you work. I love working with fresh whole spices because they offer a stronger flavor. Today I crushed cardamon pods and whole cloves to make Indian chai. Whereas in the past it would have taken a lot of time and effort to crush these with a rolling pin and clean up afterwards, it took no time at all and only a little pressure and a few twists to get perfect results. And the clean up was simple. I leave this mortar and pestle on my kitchen counter where it is handy and looks handsome. I would definitely recommend this to others who like working with fresh whole seeds and grains.

I recently purchased this item and boy, am I glad I did! It grinds just about anything, and holds just the right amount inside. Don't be fooled about the weight - it is quite heavy! But it does the job well. The outside surface looks fabulous, with its nubby texture, but the inside surface lets you grind, crush or pulverize even, if need be. It's just great. I love it. I would highly recommend this item to anyone even remotely thinking of buying!

What a hefty bowl and grinder pestle! A nice heft to it
too.
A little raw on the sides but perhaps we will get used to that. It's a rock for goodness sake! Not as smooth as we thought it would be on the outside......
My home made guac. wil look great in it , but look forward to herb grindings. Fresh herbs.

A great product! The day I received it, I ground some Mexican oregano as well as peppercorns - it performed well on both. As other reviewers have indicated, don't hide this beauty in a cabinet - it looks great sitting out on the counter, and makes the statement that you have a serious chef's kitchen.

I guess this mortar and pestle is too crude for my taset. I don't doubt that it works, but it is poorly assembled, and the exterior is sloppily finished.

I was disappointed in some respects. The picture in the catalogue clearly depicts the upper end of the pestle as a darker green and having a smooth finish, one that is more comfortable to use and more attractive. I purchased a larger model in the past and the pestle was as shown in the catalogue. Now the entire pestle is a whitish green and less comfortable to use. I gave it as a gift and the recipient was not as pleased as I would have liked since she had seen and admired the item in the catalogue.

Smaller than I expected. There is a huge dent/gash in the side. I realize they won't be perfect, but this is really ugly. The pestle is not glazed on the top like the photo. I'm sure it will work fine, but I'm very, very disappointed in how it looks. I definitely won't have it sitting out on the counter.

I was thrilled to find this available at such a great price, and even more thrilled when I finally received it. It's heavy, with a good grinding surface, and it looks lovely on my counter, like a relic from ancient times.
