I have always wanted to get this attachment, i am a KA user since 1995 but finally had the urge to get one. I was glad that it fits in either of my two KA models, the Ultra Professional 4.5 Qt and 5 Qt. s-500 series. I love it, i can now start making sausages for my family, i might get another one for my sister back home in the Philippines.
In the kitchen, I'm never without: spatula and frying pan

I've had mine for several years now and have not experienced any malfunctions. The metal parts have not "Rusted", like some other brands. The tray is not a problem - since KitchenAid makes a larger capacity tray, that attaches to the grinder - for those people who like to put 10 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket.
The pusher does "Leak" - Soft/liquid foods will turn into mush if you push them too hard. The pusher does not have an air-tight seal.... by design. If it had a tight seal, you would not be able to push the tool in - Air Lock.
My wife loves it! She makes Mexican Tamales and it's a real time saver.

My brother the butcher, gave me this attachment & the sausage stuffer for Christmas along with one-on-one sausage making lessons! Very cool. He suggests cutting the meat in as long a strip as possible instead of chunks - in that way the drive actually pulls the meat through with less effort on the user's part.
We have used it several times and of course it doesn't compare to his professional gear, but it is certainly serviceable here in the home.
We despise the plastic pusher for second grinding and sausage stuffing - it doesn't fit the opening tightly enough and it is deep grooved instead of solid so when the the necessary pressure is exerted the meat oozes up the the grooves toward your hand and makes a huge mess. My son the carpenter has been tasked with making the proper tool if I can't find it elsewhere!
That being said - sausage making has now become a Christmastime tradition here at our home. And the more people we can drag into it, the more fun we have!
The Christmas sausage this year was resplendent with sun-dried tomatoes, fresh basil, parsley and thyme , provolone cheese, and a touch of a robust Burgundy! This could have been the first year in our lives when we actually ate breakfast BEFORE we opened the presents!
Pros: performed as expected!
Cons: the pusher is terrible

The Choice for Culinary School

Last year I took a sabatical from the real world to attend culinary school. Kitchenaid mixers were the school's hands-down choice. When we learned to make sausage this grinder was the vehicle we used to grind the meat (pork, veal, etc.). The key is to cut the ingredient into medium size pieces to facilitate easy passage through the grinder. Start with the larger die then pass the ingredient through the grinder a second time, using the smaller die. To ensure proper food safety, grind the meat into a bowl (the KA mixer bowl is ideal) that's placed in a second bowl partially filled with ice water. This ensures the meat will remain at a temperature that resists the growth of harmful bacteria. I was never much of a sausage fan until I tried some of the unique products we prepared in class. The success of those efforts motivated me to order the attachment and continue my experiments at home.

I can now grind my own fresh steaks into hamburgers or pork into sausage patties. Grate hard cheeses instead of "blood, sweat and tears" from a box grater. Grated carrots for cake, zucchini for bread or pancakes are now a breeze. The possibilities are endless.

I am a Culinary Student and in my Garde Manager class we learned to make sausage. The equipment of choice was the Kitchen Aid Mixer with the Sausage attachment. This grinder works perfectly.
After making my sausage I received high reviews and the texture of my sausage was absolutely perfect. I am saving money to buy this attachment now that I have purchased the Kitchen Aid Mixer.
Wonderful piece of equipment and a great own for the Home Cook, Foodie or Chef Enthusiast.

Sausage, Anyone?

I recently visited a brewery's restaurant in Astoria, OR, which featured wonderful sausages made with Tillamook cheese and some of their beer as ingredients. They were wonderful and left me wondering if I could produce something as great. That is where the food grinder attachment comes in. I've used the standard hand grinder for a traditional cranberry-orange relish, but thought grinding meat would be just too much work. But, not any more; I'm eager to try my own sausage blends! I have heard that semi-freezing the meat before grinding is helpful.
Pros: Fast/ Speed, easy to use, multi-purpose, construction, durability, Functional/Useful, Long-lasting

Perfect for ground beef, turkey and chicken. This grinder actually grinds rather than crushes. The meat/poultry has perfect texture, and adding onions or other vegetables or bread to the mix is simple. Just one more reason to leave the KitchenAid mixer close at hand.

Mediocre

This grinder will grind meat. It will not hold very much in the tray, or grind any amount of connective tissue. I don't mean strong tendons, but even the Endomysium that covers the muscle. it just wraps around the blade. Then you have to take it all apart and clean the blade and die.
I am not sure if this is because of a dull/ cheaply made blade or if this is a common problem.
I will try to find an all metal version for my next purchase.
Except for the blade and the small tray, the product seems sturdy and effective.

The grinder worked well, especially for the first pass of meet chunks. The problem came during the second fine grind (and I suppose the same will happen when I use the stuffer) -- the meat plunger is not wide enough to prevent the meat from oozing up around it. This makes it quite difficult to push the meat down to the auger. This is a basic design flaw -- I will have to try to make something to replace the plunger that accompanied the grinder. The grinder itself is excellent.
Pros: Easy to Clean/Wash, Performs Well, Functional/Useful
Cons: Difficult to use, meat plunger

Our stand mixer dates back to the 1970's. At some point we got the grinder attachment. I am not sure we ever used it all these years. Got it out to make some venison burger and it had age cracks in a couple of places. Decided to try it before doing anything. It worked and it worked well. Faster than I had expected.
Ordered an entire new one instead of two major parts.
The new one arrived and really went through the venison that was left after we cut the steaks that we wanted. I had thought that I might have to buy a heavy duty stand alone grinder. This does the job quickly and easily for ground meat in the five to ten pound range. After that it would be a cost to time decision along with how often you needed to do more than ten pounds.
Pros: Easy to Clean/Wash, Value for Money, easy to use, Low noise, Performs Well, easy to store, Functional/Useful
Cons: Repair Costs
